“Stepping from behind the chair” is a phrase Makeba Evans likes to use when she is on her way to a shoot. With over 15 years of experience in the salon, Makeba loves to embrace the creative energy that flows with her as she becomes the freelance hair stylist “Forever Makeba.”
“Every client ha a visual concept that is so different from my last shoot or the next. I have found over the years that communication is the key to everyone’s happiness,” says Makeba whose work has appeared in several magazines, including Sophisticate’s, Hair, Moodz Sweets, Thicke, Salon Profiles and Vibe. She has had her work featured in a few music videos: DJ Drama f/ T.I., Diddy, Nelly, Twista, Wille Da Kid (5000 ONE’S VIDEO) BOB f/ Rich Boy (HATERZ VIDEO), Young Buck and Blood Raw (26 INCHES VIDEO) and USDA Young Jeezy, Slick Pulla & Blood Raw (THROUGH THIS MONEY VIDEO)
A music lover, Makeba has wielded her Midas comb in various recording studios such as The House of Music in West Oakland and Darp Studios in Atlanta. Recording artists she has styled include D’Wayne Wiggins of Tony! Toni! Tone’! and Kedar Massenburg’s protégé, Algebra Blessett.
Relocating to Atlanta from Las Vegas for the second time, Makeba hasn’t lost a step and has worked with Drexina Nelson, Jason Ivany, Leo Marshall, Alan Maffett and Brian L. Christian, some of Atlanta’s hottest photographers. Knowing where her strength lies, Makeba attributes her ‘grace under pressure’ m.o. and excellent time management skills to being a wife as well as the mother of six handsome and intelligent sons. “My tribe called Keeb keeps me motivated and on my grind,” she explains. “I show them firsthand that every day is a blessing. As we make our journey through life, we must plan for tomorrow while also making our mark on today.”
We don’t always agree on what that mark is concedes Makeba. After all, as the cliché goes, “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” That beauty, however, is a tool. “The face is what the world focuses on as the people on this planet communicate with each other,” states Makeba. “Hair should be an accessory of your face and help to deliver the visual image that you are trying to convey. We live in a world full of façades, be it hair extensions, false eyelashes or hair color. If you are going to wear it, wear it well!”
As a successful hair stylist at Nseya Salon & Spa, one of Atlanta’s Multicultural Upscale Salon’s for five years collectively, I help my clients look and feel their best. I love “Stepping from Behind the Chair” and allowing my creativity to flow. When I am on location at a shoot, fashion show or any other visual media production, I enjoy being a part of bringing the director’s ideas to life. - Forever Makeba
